Flowerstone ceramics is inspired by the beauty of rocks and stones capturing the spirit of the color and textures found in natural settings. Based on Ikebana and floral arts training of Ellen Hansen and the ceramics expertise of her ceramics teacher, Paul Hoagland, flowerstone ceramics was born. Understanding the importance of mechanics in floral design, we follow natures lead and incorporate grooves and holes that provide easy support for floral materials. This simple approach is designed to enhance the process of creating beautiful minimalistic floral design. These containers require a small amount of material so they can be used inexpensively in daily life.

Our fundamental intention is to continue be inspired by our natural surroundings and have nature fuel our creative impulse and yours too! This beauty speaks to our souls! We hope to share this energy as part of the experience of Flowerstone Ceramics. Come play with us and find the beauty of stones, flowers and leaves and the magic of your own backyard.

We have created a variety of vessels types that are appropriate for cut flower arrangements, containers gardens or as art objects. Most of them are intentionally designed for ease of use and are inspired by Ikebana, Japanese floral art techniques. We build in grooves and holes for simple support of floral material, maintaining a naturalistic style. The mechanics become part of the design of the containers and add to the quality of the texture with or without the addition of floral material.

Floral sculptures are easy to create with Flowerstone ceramics. With the simple addition of a few leaves and a single flower, the vessel becomes alive. We invite you to see some floral design ideas that may inspire your creativity. Our favorite materials are aspidistra and lily grass. The nature of these greens is to be flexible and easy to manipulate into a variety of shapes that easily become a contemporary sculpture. This form of Ikebana is often called Jiyuka and emphasizes personal creativity and the celebration of the seasons. Ikebana reminds us to be present and appreciate the moment. Creating a floral representation of the current season reminds us to celebrate the now. We encourage you to play with this idea as you design seasonal arrangements with the use of seasonal products.

In this time where we are all spending more time closer to home, we hope that the idea of bringing a sense of garden inside is a welcome addition. As we work with Flowerstones, we deepen our appreciation of our gardens and hope to develop a renewed sense of wonder and awe for the simple yet beautiful things in our world that hold beauty and help us stay grounded in the present moment.

“THERE IS A DIFFERENT BEAUTY IN SIMPLICITY IN A SINGLE LINE PLACED JUST SO, A SINGLE FLOWERS AMONG ROCKS. THE HARSHNESS OF THE STONE MAKES THE FLOWER MORE PRECIOUS.” Robert Jordan

Here are some images that have inspired our work. As you can see, for our first launch we are intrigued by the colors and textures of the Pacific Northwest. These are taken at Oswald State Park West near Cannon Beach, OR. We look forward to finding new sources of natural inspiration that will help us create additional collections. We welcome you to send us beautiful images of stone and their location that speak to you.
